Kleeschen visits the Embassy
On 6 December, Luxembourg children living in Ireland were invited to celebrate ‘Kleesecher’s Dag’ at the Embassy of Luxembourg. In the company of Ambassador Ensch and the Kleeschen himself, the children were given traditional treats and sang the song ‘Gudde Kleeschen. Léiwe Kleeschen’.
In Luxembourg, ‘Kleesecher’s Dag’ is an important holiday for all children on which they do not go to school. In the evenings leading up to the 6 December, they leave a slipper outside their room so that the Kleeschen (St Nicholas) can put a treat in it. On ‘Kleesecher’s Dag’, the children wake up to a plate filled with chocolates, nuts, mandarins and accompanied by a present from Kleeschen as reward for their good behavior. If a child has been inobedient, however, it is the ‘Housécker’ that visits the house during the night, leaving a wooden rod instead of goodies.
To celebrate ‘Kleesecher’s Dag’ with Luxembourg citizens abroad is an important part of upholding the tradition, and the Embassy of Luxembourg in Dublin was glad to be able to share the joys of ‘Kleesecher’s Dag’ with the families that joined in.
